Ryan Travis Christian's upbringing in '90s Chicago suburbs fueled his surreal, pop culture-influenced graphite drawings with absurd experiences. Inspired by Chicago Imagism, he explores the paradoxical relationship between innocent cartoons and disturbing messages, contemplating the obsolescence of his inspirations. Vintage political cartoons and hand-drawn animations, like those by Ub Iwerks, George Condo, and The Hairy Who, influence his intricate illustrations. Christian meticulously layers graphite to reveal high-contrast graphics and dizzying patterns; wavy figures move in slow motion, inhabiting misty landscapes and melting fences. Christian's recent work expands to comment on current national and global crises, with his historical references mirroring contemporary concerns. His work often features text derived from personal notes on conversations or encounters that remain relevant and reflect his sources' caliber.
